Author's Notes: Draco was not harmed in the making of this drabble.
The mirror doesn't lie. Sure it may say some incredibly unpleasant things, but it doesn't lie. Draco laughs inwardly at the notion that his life is unpleasant. His life is hell. He looks like hell. Apparent in his eyes is the lack of sleep. His skin is dry and sallow except for the dark rings around his eyes and the Dark Mark on his forearm. Every so often it burns. He's not quite certain if it is sense memory or an actual reminder from his Lord. He tries not to dwell on the fact that while other Hogwarts students are fixated on pop quizzes, kissing in the corridors, and Quidditch, his entire life is consumed by an impossible task. He's pretty sure the outcome will be his death regardless of success or failure. Perhaps he can spare his mother. Perhaps his father will remember him with pride.
He boasts of glory and bountiful reward to his housemates. He spins tales of a marvelous future for those of pureblood who align themselves with his Lordship. He even tells himself these things, but the mirror doesn't lie.

Rec of the day...
As many of you well know, I am an absolute fanfic snob. Yes, I can enjoy sheer smutty PWP's but when something has a plot and is supposed to be a "story" I look for sharp writing, solid story telling, and I am a plot construction whore. There are a lot of "good" stories out there, and not that you shouldn't read them, but there are always little bits of this and that to throw me out or that I notice like little pimples. I am reccing this next story heartily and do not think you'll find an ounce of fault with it. It's tightly woven. The characterization of Harry and Draco are wonderfully derived from canon. Hagrid and his brood of magical creatures make an excellent supporting cast that adds to the main tale, never detracting or seeming forced into the story.

I will say that I did figure our who the author was. For the life of my I have no idea why the mods have left in the "notes" before the reveal on this anon fest. There've been 4 stories that I easily and correctly guessed the authors just from the headers. And I don't really think you'd need to be close friends or even know them that well. Maybe only have seen one of their headers before. Anyway... so maybe I have a slight bias, but I'm usually a pretty harsh judge, even with folks I know/read. On the other side of that coin, I haven't been too interested in back to Hogwarts fics as a genre in general and have only read a handful of stories from this fest that I've seen rec'd/discussed elsewhere. So for me to like a "Hogwarts" fic, it has to overcome my general "tired of it" feeling that I've had for quite some time. I was so impressed at the sharp focus of this fic. It never got bogged down like so many "8th year" fics do with full school year story telling of classes and meetings... Even the telling of the trials was masterfully done. Just enough to give us the exposition we needed as it set the tone and provided the motivation for our protagonist.
I also gave the author points for choosing a really smart prompt. She took a neat idea (kudos to the prompter) with a two paragraph outline and excecuted a well crafted 30k word story. If you like down and out Draco and a Harry who just wants to find his way in the world, you'll love this. It looks at many of the themes from canon and reworks them into this tale of hope, love, redemption, and acceptance. It also has an extremely realistic feel to it.

Hi the reveal has happened. I'm really excited to find out that a couple of my "Don't Miss" fics were written by authors that I am unfamiliar with – woot! New archives to go explore! My two fics were: After Eden (Judgment) and Black's Blood Curse (The Empress).
spidermoth deftly picked me out of the line up and wins PWP smut of her choice – drop me a line;) Thanks profusely to all who took the time to read stories, leave comments, and/or write recs and reviews for the fest. Even if you didn't like my stories, that's OK. That's why there's chocolate and vanilla (and strawberry and mint n'chip and…) :D Congrats to all who participated.
Extra special thanks to geoviki, marguerite_26, devian_11, frantic_mice (I really did love your reviews and thought they were humorous and very supportive of the fest), and ravenqueen55 for the blind recs and reviews – they cheered me up. As much as people say not to judge a fic by #comments, it was a bit sad to see the lowest number for my prompt for both my entries. Also hearty thanks to all my EWE-mates but especially blamebrampton, winnett, and sesheta_66 for the not-so-blind recs/reviews and various team pimping and cheerleading. So all of the fics for hd_worldcup have been posted. I gave some individual "don't miss" recs as the fest was in progress, but here's a full list of my Pre-Reveal recs. I think there's still a few days left to read, comment, and vote (if you aren't a participant;). Also, if you're interested, some of my general thoughts. I'll do a quick post about my own entries after the reveal. If you feel you've spotted me, drop me a line. I'm horribly vain and am curious. One final caveat on the recs is that I did not read everything, but I did read a lot and skimmed/read openings of most. If you are curious what I thought about a certain fic, feel free to drop me a line after the reveal. There were a ton of good reads, so just because I didn't think they were absolute standouts didn't mean that I didn't enjoy them.

I really hadn't found anything in hd_worldcup that I connected with enough to out and out rec yet. I got a bit behind and read 5 fics today (various prompts) to try and catch up. Nothing really struck a chord with me, whether it be the writing, the story, the characterization, etc.

The characterizations are impossibly canon. The writing rich and compelling. The story stands on it's own but intricately weaves the theme of the Tower prompt and established canon all together in one big fat awesome story. The suspense, the drama, the hot sex, the lush details, the action, the emotionally riveting story, the hopeful wish you will have for Harry and Draco to...
Quotes the master: "We go on. That's what happens. The world falls apart, but it keeps on turning. We have no choice but to go on."
And as a bonus, there's no Ginny, Ron or Hermione bashing.
After I finished, I thought about how I LOVED it to pieces and can only assume that it's an author that I usually gel with. I'm perfectly open to being proved wrong.
(PS - I decided that I was only going to rec stories from other than my own team that really knocked my socks off and that I wanted to see get some readership now that fandom seems to be flagging a bit;) |

A Good Man Harry/Draco NC-17
ETA: updated my index over at Slashcity and put up A Good Man there as well (cleaned up SPAG and made other minor fixes - Read this version;)
This was probably the most involved and most emotionally draining fic I've ever written. I also think it is some of my best writing and storytelling to date. It has extremely heavy themes. Harry takes Draco on as his slave in order to spare him from Azkaban. There is non-con in it, but it's not Death Eater or Retribution violent non-con. It progresses to dub-con and then becomes consensual. It's a psychological romance and there is genuine remorse. If you can't stand any angst or any heavy themes in general, then nope, this isn't the fic for you. No hard feelings. If you do like an angstful story now and then and aren't too sure about a non-con or slave!fic, then I'd ask you to give it a try. My feeling is that this fic is really a hurt/comfort at heart.
I'd like to post it to an appropriate comm so that it will find its target audience. If anyone has any good suggestions, please let me know.
When I do my archiving I'll add my proper beta thank you's to the header etc., but right now I need to make sure I thank Thevina for the awesome beta and support because my insecurity level on this fic was beyond my norm. Also C.Dumbledore and MrsQuizzical for the gamma read through, especially since this is not your type of story. It's one of the longest stories I've ever written and needed the extra eyes.
In the comments to this fic, I was asked a number of questions and since I did quite a lot of thinking on this novella, I decided to type up some notes and commentary.

I want something that feels real - where both characters have matured but still tend to rub sparks off each other.
Additional Summary: Divorce sucks even if you're gay and your marriage had the sole purpose of producing an heir. His old plan in tatters, Draco begins to formulate a new plan. Harry Potter becomes his partner and Draco is definitely, most definitely, not in love.

Summary: Ginny Weasley is getting married… to Blaise Zabini that is. It’s been seven years since the fall of Voldemort and since Harry Potter has seen Draco Malfoy. Somehow fate has put them in each other’s lives yet again. “It figures.”
A/N: I was a bit apprehensive to write H/D because there’s so much of it out there and just what is there that possibly hasn’t been done. This story and dialogue; however, were strong and unrelenting in my head for quite some time, so I figured I should write it. It’s a contemporary post-war romance. Harry’s alone and so is Draco and while it is no surprise to us, they are surprised to find that they are drawn to each other. I suppose it’s my own “Realistically speaking, how can I get these two men together.”
